From a recent study release by Pew Research Center titled The Rise of Asian Americans, which reported that Asian Americans is the the fastest growing demographic group (overtaking Hispanics) in the US:
Asian Americans are the highest-income, best-educated and fastest-growing racial group in the United States. They are more satisfied than the general public with their lives, finances and the direction of the country, and they place more value than other Americans do on marriage, parenthood, hard work and career success, according to a comprehensive new nationwide survey by the Pew Research Center.
Sounds like they would be the archetypical Republican and conservative voters, right?
Compared with the general public, Asian Americans are more likely to support an activist government and less likely to identify as Republicans. Half are Democrats or lean Democratic, while only 28% identify with or lean toward the GOP.
On balance, Asian Americans prefer a big government that provides more services (55%) over a smaller government than provides fewer services (36%).
While they differ on the role of government, Asian Americans are close to the public in their opinions about two key social issues. By a ratio of 53% to 35%, Asian Americans say homosexuality should be accepted by society rather than discouraged. And on the issue of abortion, 54% of Asian Americans say it should be legal in all or most cases, while 37% say it should be illegal.
The Pew report broke Asian Americans down into individual ethnic groups (i.e., Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese.) Just about every group strongly prefer Democrats over Republicans by wide margins, (i.e., over 20%.) The only exceptions are Filipinos and Vietnamese, who still prefer Democrats over Republicans, but by much smaller margins, (i.e., 43% to 40% and 36% to 35%: oddly enough, Filipinos and Vietnamese are also the two groups with the lowest education achievements and highest poverty rates compared to other Asians. It is odd because one would think poor people would be more likely support Democrats.)
So why are Asian Americans overwhelmingly Democrats and liberal?
1. The open racism of conservatives. I think we can all admit this exists. You don’t have to be one to be a conservative, but these days you won’t be a Democrat if you are one.
2. Conservative wedge issues based on religion don’t have the same results when the people have different religions. Abortion or Homosexuality is a religious issue for the Republican party. Despite the label of “cultural conservative” which is often applied to such voters, the reality is this is a Christian voting block, rather than a “socially conservative” one, which might draw in actual social conservatives.
3. Quite often these people come from countries with actual socialism. So nonsense posters which call Democrats socialists are a source for comedy, rather than nods of assent. Most such people don’t see anything wrong with the government providing education or health guidelines. They’re just happy to have a government who does this sort of thing at all.
Vietnamese and Koreans tend to vote republican because of communism.
“By a ratio of 53% to 35%, Asian Americans say homosexuality should be accepted by society rather than discouraged”
Yet every Asian demographic in California voted overwhelmingly in favor of Prop 8.
They are quite conservative on a myriad of issues. But because they come from very secular countries, they vote democrat. Politics has nothing to do with it.
They probably associate with the democratic party because it makes more sense to them. Republicans can be quick to blame problems on others.
“Let’s support big corporations, they know how to run this country and boost our economy”
“The problem with out economy is the outsourcing of work to foreign countries(by big corporations)”
“Let’s cut taxes on the wealthy and raise it on the lower and middle class, because we’re rich!”
Maybe they actually care about the future of the US and want their descendants to be able to live in a better world where people aren’t as selfish.
Because, as with all minorities, republicans continually claim that they all want “handouts and free stuff”. Asian immigrants are honorable, hard working people who didn’t want to live in countries that treat their workers like slaves. Why would they come to America and support a party that wants to turn them into slave laborers here?
the republican party has made it clear that they’re a WHITE only CHRISTIAN ONLY party, so everyone else is a democrat by default
They are new to the country and do not know any better.
Easy, free stuff…
