Why did Cardinal Pacelli (Pope Pious XII) sold out to Hitler knowing what NAZIS were doing?

Cardinal Pacelli, who had become the Vatican Secretary of State in 1930, signed the concordat July 20, 1933 after Hitler had begun persecuting Jews, including those who had earlier converted to Catholicism. Also, in spite of Pius XI’s Casti Connubi, a doctrine about the sanctity of human life, Pacelli signed the pact after Hitler’s law was adopted for Prevention of Genetically Diseased Offspring. This included the sterilization of hundreds of thousands of persons with mental retardation and physical problems such as blindness. In other words, Cardinal Pacelli sold out to Hitler by giving him a blank check to destroy democracy, persecute the Jews and in effect to do anything that Hitler viewed as a political decision. This was a clear assertion of Vatican power, as neither the German bishops nor the Catholic Center Party were able to thwart the Vatican bureaucracy. In March, 1939, Pacelli became Pope Pius XII.

Because Hitler was doing what dozens of popes in the past had tried to do, kill anyone not saying their prayers in latin. Many of the war criminals got out of Germany and to South America on vatican passports.

Read ‘The Persecution of The Catholic Church in the Third Reich’ a book written at the time in the 1930’s, and you will understand that the Catholic Church in no way supported the Nazi regime. In fact, Hitler regarded the Catholic Church as an enemy of the Nazi State.

The myth that Pope Pius XII was sympathetic to the Nazi regime originated from a work of fiction written by a Soviet communist. Although this was common knowledge at the time, enemies of the Church, including many Protestants (who, as Christians should know better than to perpetuate a lie and slander) used this work of fiction to smear the Pope and the Church as though it were fact. And they continue to do so to the present day.

Well without the intervention of Pope Pius XII ,many Jews would have been killed. Many of them were hidden in Roman CAtholic Churches covenants and Monastery and even the Vatican itself
The great Pope PIus XII did this even at the expense of his life. The Facist Mussolini was viewing the great POpe Pius XII with suspicion and Mussolini wanted to capture Jeews in Italy so that they could reperated to Germany and her conqured States right into the concentration camp where they would be killed
POpe Pis XII and Cardinal Michael Von Faulhaber cowrote with Pope Pius XII then Cardinal Pacelli condemming particularly the paganism of the national-socialism ideology, the myth of race and blood, and the fallacy of their conception of God. It warned Catholics that the growing Nazi ideology, which exalted one race over all others, was incompatible with Catholic Christianity. [2][3] According to Martin Rhonheimer it was Pacelli who added to Faulhaber’s milder draft the following passage:

Whoever exalts race, or the people, or the state, or a particular form of state, or the depositories of power, or any other fundamental value of the human community—however necessary and honorable be their function in worldly things—whoever raises these notions above their standard value and divinizes them to an idolatrous level, distorts and perverts an order of the world planned and created by God
POpe Pius XII and his fellow German Catholic were also prisoners
Even Golden Meir the former Israel Prime minister called the late Pope Pius XII a hero and a friend
We have been kind and charitable towards our Jewish Brothers and Sisters. Not because we have an ulterior motive but because we are called by our Great God Messiah and Saviour Jesus Christ to love your God with all your heart soul and might and love your neighbours as yourself
The great Saint Paul also says Faith,Hope and Charity the greatest is Love
Your great ancestors would have not wanted to see you in this wretched state but only with a compasisonate heart of gold
Yours in Christ

A “concordat” is the equivalent of a treaty when the agreement is between the church and a state. It is not a “sell out.”`

In 1933, the Nazis had just legally come to power in Germany and no one knew the depths of tyranny to which Nazi Germany would sink in the next decade.

In countries where the national constitution did not guarantee the freedom of religion, it was the practice of the most major religions to negotiate for that freedom and then sign a concordat (treaty) to protect it.

By the way, shortly before signing the concordat with the Catholic Church, Germany signed similar agreements with the major Protestant churches in Germany.

With love in Christ.

Why did Bill Clinton allow the sale of our missile technology to China,Why did the current at the time Prime Minister of England go to Germany and come back proclaiming Hitler wants only Peace. Why did the Soviets sign a peace treaty with Hitler,i mean lets face it all those named were fooled.Have you not ever heard the old saying hind sight is 20/20. There was one Voice and he was feared because he was a strong Conservative and was scoffed at for warning the World of Hitlers dangers and intentions and was called a war monger a man who preferred war over peaceful coexistencee and all we needed to do was set down and talk it out with Hitler as we were only needing more understanding and this man said he’s a liar and wants war that man was Winston Churchill.

The treaty was signed in 1933, but violent persecution of the jews did not begin until later.

The Zionist leadership in Palestine wrote in February 1938 that according to “a very reliable private source – one which can be traced back to the highest echelons of the SS leadership” there was “an intention to carry out a genuine and dramatic pogrom in Germany on a large scale in the near future.”

The basics of the treaty was that the German government would not close down Catholic schools or churches and the Catholic Church would not get involved with politics (run for public office).

You FAIL at history

Obviously if Pacelli was aware atrocities were ongoing and turned a blind eye he would be morally culpable, however, we must be careful not to judge a-historically. Exactly how much the Cardinal knew is by no means certain. It’s certainly doubtful any attempt by the Nazi regime to coerce support from a Catholic Cardinal would not be filled with declarations of intent to persecute the blind and handicapped or the jews for that matter.

He didn’t. It’s so easy to try to judge in hindsight. We have the benefit of knowing how things went, even in 1933 no one could have known. In fact, America and other nations refused to get involved even when the concentration camps were going full tilt. Trying to make the Vatican complicit in the horrors of Hitler’s insanity is ridiculous. Only anti-Catholics tend to do that.

The concordat signed by the Cardinal in 1933 is still in effect in Germany today. Cardinal Pacelli said in August 1933 to Ivone Kirkpatrick, the British minister to the Vatican: “The spiritual welfare of 20 million Catholic souls in Germany was at stake, and that was the first and, indeed, only consideration” in agreeing to the concordat. The Holy See “had to choose between an agreement on [Nazi] lines and the virtual elimination of the Catholic Church in the Reich.”

As Cardinal Avery Dulles explained in Models of the Church (1974), this ecclesiology regards the church as a hierarchical institution, indeed as a “perfect society,” founded by Jesus Christ in order to make grace available to all people. Given this view, church officials saw themselves responsible before God for protecting the church’s organization and its functions of sanctifying, teaching and governing. In Pius XII and the Holocaust (2002), José M. Sánchez has pinpointed a pope’s “first obligation” according to the ecclesiology of perfect society: “As head of an institutional church, he is charged with protecting that church; according to Catholic theology, the church is the necessary means of providing the sacraments which give the grace needed for salvation. Without the priests to administer the sacraments and the freedom to receive them, Catholics can be hindered in their search for salvation”

In other words, the heirarchy of the Church understood their first duty to be to the Church, to protect her, so that she can provide the sacraments to the faithful. The idea that without an agreement between Hitler and the Church, that Catholics would be persecuted was a real possibilty. There was no way that not signing the concordat would help the Jews, but it would certainly add Catholics to the list of the persecuted. In fact, even so 3 million Catholics were killed in concentration camps.

But we also know that Pacelli, who became Pope Pius XII did a great deal to save the Jews. In fact 800,000 trees were planted in Israel after WWII to commemorate the number of Jewish people Pope Pius XII was credited with saving. Additionally, Rabbi Zolli became a Catholic, in part because of the great deeds Pope Pius XII did to save the Jews.

We must remember that the Holocaust was also anti-Christian. After Hitler revealed his true intentions, the Catholic Church opposed him. Even the famous Albert Einstein testified to that. According to the December 23, 1940 issue of Time magazine on page 38, Einstein said:

Being a lover of freedom, when the revolution came in Germany, I looked to the universities to defend it, knowing that they had always boasted of their devotion to the cause of truth; but, no, the universities immediately were silenced. Then I looked to the great editors of the newspapers whose flaming editorials in days gone by had proclaimed their love of freedom; but they, like the universities, were silenced in a few short weeks…

Only the Church stood squarely across the path of Hitler’s campaign for suppressing truth. I never had any special interest in the Church before, but now I feel a great affection and admiration because the Church alone has had the courage and persistence to stand for intellectual truth and moral freedom. I am forced thus to confess that what I once despised I now praise unreservedly.

In another, similar statement, Einstein referred explicitly to the Catholic Church (Lapide, p. 251). This is an extraordinary testimony by an agnostic German scientist of Jewish heritage. Even though there were traitors in her ranks, the Church still opposed the Nazi movement.

Not trusting the new regime, the Vatican signed a Concordat with the Reich on July 20, 1933 in an attempt to protect the Church’s rights in Germany. But the Nazis quickly violated its articles. In Lent 1937 Pope Pius XI issued the encyclical “Mit brennender Sorge” (With burning sorrow) with the help of German bishops and Cardinal Pacelli (later Pope Pius XII). It was smuggled into Germany and read in all German Catholic churches at the same hour on Palm Sunday 1937. It did not explicitly mention Hitler or Nazism, but it firmly condemned the Nazi doctrines. On September 20,

Because, as I’m sure you know if you know this much, Cardinal Pacelli was the Cardinal of Berlin where he met and became friends with Hitler. Further during no time of his reign as Pope did he condemn anything that was being done by the Nazis, though, ironically, the Vatican saved more than 20 thousand Jews. My aunt, who’s a nun, said that she thinks there were behind the scenes talks with Hitler to get him to stop. I think, if anything, it was to save the Vatican. I don’t think there’s any excuse for not condemning it and anyone associated with it. The Pope is supposed to be a “moral compass” for the world. It still bothers me.

Hitler was just taking to a new level Christian ANTISEMITISM and he was also fighting Communism so the Vatican fell in love with the possibilities of the new regime. Most Christians think that what happens to Jews they deserve it. This is part of God’s punishment for not accepting fricking Christ.
